Scar Treatments/Rhinophyma

Successfully treated using the powerful CO2 laser

Rhinophyma is a common skin condition that causes the nose to enlarge and become red, bumpy and bulbous. It is often the result of untreated, severe rosacea, which is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes facial redness on the nose and cheeks in most patients.

Rhinophyma can lead to permanent disfigurement of the nose and the large bulbous nasal tip can cause obstruction of the nostrils in severe cases. Rhinophyma can be severely debilitating and responsible for cosmetic concerns for many people, which can consequently impact on mental well-being.

The most effective treatment for rhinophyma is to use the Ultrapulse CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) laser, which is recognised as the gold standard in the field. At The London Scar Clinic, we have exceptional consultants that specialise in using CO2 lasers to successfully treat this condition.

During the surgical treatment for rhinophyma, the consultant uses the laser to remove the excess tissue on the nose caused by the skin disorder and destroy the abundant blood vessels present. The outcome will be an improved appearance / profile of the nose in combination with better functionality.

Treatment for rhinophyma is very popular to avoid long term symptoms and permanent disfigurement of the nose. Whilst patients seek to address the symptoms of rhinophyma, they also want to improve how the nose looks, and thus reduce the feelings of social embarrassment they may experience.

Using the CO2 laser, our specialist consultant will remove excess tissue from the nose and reshape the affected area; enlarged blood vessels may also be reduced.

Treatment using the CO2 laser is performed under local anaesthetic, however some minor and short-lived discomfort may still be experienced.

Following CO2 laser treatment for rhinophyma, it will take approximately 3-4 weeks for the nose to heal. After the procedure, the nose will have a slightly charred appearance with oozing and scabbing to be expected. Post-procedure wound care is very important, and the specialist consultant will provide advice to ensure the best possible outcome.

Rhinophyma generally does not tend to recur after CO2 laser treatment however it is important to ensure the procedure is carried out by an expert specialist and the post-procedure care guidelines are followed.

The price for treatment for rhinophyma starts from approximately £2,000, which includes both consultant and facility fees. The total cost will be confirmed following the initial consultation.
